Introduction

First, let’s get oriented to the program, discuss logistics of where the software is located and computer access.

Duke has 10 floating licenses for Virtool. Please be considerate, and do not keep a session open if you are not using it, as this can prevent someone else from using it.

Please plan to work on the PC’s in either 1411 CIEMAS, 130 North, or the Arcade. (3rd Floor North). If you must install a copy on your local computer, please contact Rachael Brady at rbrady@cs.duke.edu.

  1. Head over to room 1411 CIEMAS, 130 North, or the Arcade and try logging into any PC. Be sure to select “ACPUB Kerberos” as your login domain so you can use yoor ordinary Duke login and password..
  2. Launch Virtools Dev from Start Menu ? Program Files ? Virtools ? Virtools Dev 4.0 ? Virtools Dev 4.0). Email Rachael Brady (rbrady@cs.duke.edu) if you cannot launch the program.
  3. You will see an “empty” virtual world instantiated in front on your screen, which should look like this:
  4. Experiment with instantiating objects, changing their materials (such as texture map and transparency). Play with selecting object and changing texture, size, and color. Add a sprite!”

TIP: Use the F1 key to access help. Virtools has an extensive help system, so pressing F1 often is one of the best ways to learn how to use Virtools.
